Shake Rhythm & Roll music festival
Introduction from 2011

In 2011, The Shake Rhythm n' Roll Music Festival was hosted in Asbury Park. It was a remarkable 5 days of music and dance. We hope to return the festival in 2013.

Here is the original write up prior to the event:

The Shake Rhythm & Roll Festival will Recreate and Celebrate the early roots of Rock n' Roll with music and dance events that capture a remarkable time period in American creativity and lifestyle. Our festival will showcase early Roots Rock n' Roll, Jump Blues, Boogie Woogie, Rhythm and Blues, Doo-Wop, Swing, Rockabilly, Latin, combined with the social dances that fit, and with just one look, you'll think you've been transported back in time.

And the festival will include classes where you can learn all the dances that were a major part of American lifestyle in the 1930's, - 1950's. This camp will specialize in partner dances of these eras like the Bop, Boogie Woogie, Balboa, Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag alongside line dances like The Stroll, The Madison, The Shim Sham.

The Name
What's our name all about?
The words represent three areas of life that combine to make one fabulous festival. Here are the definitions you should know:

Shake - (shak). 1. To cause to move to and fro with jittery movements (a.k.a. “dance”)
Rhythm - (ri-them). 1. Patterned recurrence of a beat, accent, or the like. (a.k.a. "music")
Roll - (rol) 1. To move or be moved on wheels. Prominent expression used during the 1940’s and 50’s referencing to riding one’s car.

Our Philosophy
Put simply, it’s a vision that celebrates the 1930’s – 1950’s, not only in terms of the musical styles that grew out of those periods, but also in lifestyle capturing the music that launched and fertilized the social dance scenes in America, giving additional life to the Lindy Hop, Boogie Woogie (east coast swing), Balboa and Collegiate Shag (some of the most loved and endeared swing dances). This brings us to our additional vision which is to encourage and invite the world to dance, to be active and to use this environment to make a positive change both in your life and our community.

The Location
Asbury Park, New Jersey

This seaside resort founded back in the late 1800s grew to become one of the most famous coastal cities and vacation destinations on the entire East Coast of the United States.....Shortly after the city's inception, a beach Boardwalk was constructed and featured an orchestra pavilion, public changing rooms and a pier extending into the Atlantic Ocean... In the 1920s, the additions of the Paramount Theatre and Convention Hall ushered in a new era for showcasing music and performances.

Like many American cities, Asbury Park experienced decline and fell on tough times for a Asbury Park Casinonumber of years. Brought back on the map in the 1980’s by New Jersey musicians such as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, this town returned to being the tour stop for some of the greatest rock & roll bands. But more recently (in just the past few years), a new chapter in Asbury Park's rich history began. The Boardwalk started to undergo an extensive restoration process for some of its key historic features.....and the transformation continues...

Asbury Park Casino
It’s a remarkable place where you can spend the day on the beautiful beaches, catching rays, swimming, surfing, dining on the boardwalk in the evening and jumpin' thru the night at some of the most amazing clubs, some located in the architectural gems that date back to the turn of the 20th Century. Most notable perhaps is the 1930 Beaux Arts Convention Hall on the city's Boardwalk. Designed by the architects of New York City's Grand Central Station, the Convention Hall once hosted big band greats Glenn Miller and Harry James.

Come join the fun and help us bring to this shore the music and dance that we love, that was born here in America, and that turned the world’s music scene upside down. We'll feature home grown Rhythm & Blues, Doo Wop and early roots Rock n' Roll bands from right here in New Jersey alongside national acts from California to New York.

Asbury

Note from the founder of Shake, Rhythm & Roll:

”Ladies and Gentleman, I see this as an amazing opportunity for our local dance and music community, for fans of the 1950’s and for this fascinating seaside town. Together, I hope this project will bring more energy to the restoration of the remaining historic facilities here while we get to experience this rich majestic American seaside vacation spot and contribute to the music scene that belongs here.” Mark your calendars and we hope you'll join us! "
